The history of the victorian house that is now named Berries & Marigolds dates back to 1897. The land for the house was initially purchased from the United States government in 1879. There is an open debate about the year the home was actually built - whether in 1879 or 1897.

The house was built before any of the roads so a right of way was sold to the railroad to allow goods to be transported to and from the railway.

In the early 1900's one of the owners used the attic as an art studio for her painting. One of her pieces of rosemaling is on used as a towel rack in Aunt Juella’s bathroom.

During this early time there were cabins for rent on the property. They were called the "Star Cabins" and came complete with a concession stand.

Over the years there have been over 20 owners of this home. The house has been a single dwelling home up to having been sub-divided into 5 apartments. The wrap-around porch was converted to a kitchen to accommodate one apartment. They used shared baths.

The two-story barn on the property was built in the spring of 2002. It was built to look like the barn grandpa had on the farm in the early 1900s and serves as the "Gift Barn."

The summer kitchen and the outhouse were purchased at an auction on a farm in Glenwood and moved to the property in the fall of 2001.

Berries & Marigolds was named after their grandparents by Paul and Jeannie's daughters, ZoAnn and Angie, who adored their grandpa and grandma.

Grandpa always called the little kids "The Berries." While grandma raised marigolds anywhere she could find a spot, even up and down the public sidewalk.
